The National Motor Museum’s origins go back to 1956 when the present Lord Montagu
created the Montagu Motor Museum as a tribute to his father John, one of Britain’s
motoring pioneers.
The museum rapidly grew in size and popularity, and in 1970 Lord Montagu founded
a charitable trust to safeguard the collections for the long term benefit of the
nation.

Architect Leonard Manasseh was commissioned to design a new building to house the
collections and in 1972 the National Motor Museum was opened by HRH The Duke of
Kent. This was followed by the opening of the innovative ‘Wheels’ ride in 1986 and
the construction of the Trust Centre in 1988 to accommodate libraries, education
facilities and reserve collections.
The National Motor Museum Trust has now acquired over 300 vehicles and tens of thousands
of objects relating to motoring history. The importance of the museum was confirmed
in 1997 when
it was given designated status, an accolade only bestowed on museums
with pre-eminent collections of national and international importance.
Many of the exhibits are in working order and are driven on rallies, such as the
London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, motorcycle runs and events at Beaulieu and overseas. |
